I’ve noticed that in recent years, shawls seem to have made their way into my “can’t leave home without it” list. It makes sense, if you really think about it. Shawls are awesome. They’re light, lovely, elegant and they pretty much go with anything.
Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefits, they’re also Philippine weather-appropriate.
As I mentioned in a previous post, we’re kind of cold-weather-deprived in the Philippines, so people have a tendency to get a little carried away with the winter-wear whenever the rains come and the temperature drops a bit.
When the coldest weather you’re likely to experience is inside an air-conditioned room, shawls are perfect. And since our weather’s kind of schizophrenic, warm but lightweight shawls are extra handy because when it suddenly becomes hot as HELL, they’re no problem to tuck away.
But the best reason of all, and the REAL reason I carry shawls around all the time has nothing whatsoever to do with the weather…
I call it SHAWL-O-FLAGE.
Since my body seems intent on betraying me more and more with the passing of every year, I’ve found that a wisely-chosen dress and a strategically positioned shawl can work wonders to hide the ravages of time - or overeating. Whichever applies. In my case it’s both.
Don’t believe me? Allow me to illustrate a few case studies for your review…
