5 Fab Filipino Food Blogs

Filipinos love food, so it only stands to reason that there are a ton of food blogs in our local blogosphere. The thing is, the majority seem to be more of restaurant review types.

(Yeah, everyone’s a critic over here. And a budding food photographer.)

While I enjoy those types of food blogs, there are just too many of them, and they tend to review a lot of the same places. I’m also a little suspicious of some, because it’s really tempting to sell your soul for some free food.

image

I personally prefer food blogs with recipes, because I’m the delusional type who actually thinks I have the time and talent to make them.

Oh well, a girl can dream, right?

So anyway, if you’re like me, here are 5 recipe-type food blogs I really like. I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy them too.

1. Pepper.ph

Pepper.ph is a really popular blog which I first discovered when they posted a recipe hack of Real Coffee Boracay’s Calamansi Muffins. Of course, I messed it up, but that was through no fault of the Pepper peeps.

They do a lot of food hacks - which I love - but they also have a lot of really fabulous recipes of their own. They also do fearless, unbiased restaurant reviews by real chefs, which I totally appreciate. But the thing that really keeps me going back to this blog is the FOOD PORN.

Their food photos are just so gorgeous, I often have to resist the urge to lick my iPad. Go have a look for yourself. The blog’s supposed to be “silly and rebellious” but it’s hands-down the most polished and professional-looking blog among my faves.

2. The Fat Kid Inside

I love Erwan Heussaff’s food blog for a lot of reasons — the name being the first. THE FAT KID INSIDE? How cute is that??? And btw - how cute is HE?

He’s adorable. More so because he used to be fat, and I can relate. Even if I’m a Fat Kid Inside AND Outside. He’s like an inspiration to fat people everywhere.

I often make the mistake of thinking that life is fair, and that if someone’s gorgeous he/she probably doesn’t have a brain, but no… Erwan disproves that. His posts are well-written, and his recipes are great (yummy, pretty easy to make, and best of all - healthy), so his blog is really a pleasure to read.

3. 80 Breakfasts

I’ve actually known Joey, the lovely lady behind 80 Breakfasts (and the Family Kitchen column in Yummy magazine) for a while but I had no idea she had a food blog until a few months ago. I’m so glad I discovered it!

I have this long, practically cobwebbed list of recipes from her blog that I plan to make someday (because they really do look fantastic) and she has a warm, chatty writing tone that makes you feel like you’re sitting at her kitchen counter, licking leftover cookie batter from a bowl as you listen to her. She’s great.

4. Real Girl, Toy Kitchen

The adventures of a Real Girl making Real Food in her Toy Kitchen. Hilarity or tragedy ensues. Then dinner.

I only discovered this blog yesterday when Johanna left a funny comment on one of my posts. This woman really cracks me up, and I’ve decided to make her my new blog BFF… whether she likes it or not.

FOOD and FUNNY. How can I not love this blog? Johanna’s recipes look champ, but it’s the hilarious write-ups that’ll definitely keep me coming back for more. Two thumbs up to my new BFF.

5. Market Manila

I listed this blog last because I haven’t actually visited it in a while, but it’s a great (and very well-known) food blog nonetheless. I’ve always found it really interesting because the blogger prefers to stay anonymous and just refers to himself as “Marketman” — which makes me think of him as some sort of food superhero.

image

.. which he probably is to his many foodie fans.

His blog isn’t really a recipe blog per se, although he does have a lot of great recipes, like this one for what he calls the best adobo ever — which I’ve always been interested in but too intimidated to make. He’s more of like a market expert (hence the superhero name - MARKETMAN!!!) who can tell you where to find the best ingredients for everything. If you cook, he’s your man. MARKETMAN!!!

Aaaand that’s it, folks! If you know of any other good recipe-type Filipino food blogs, please let me know! I’d love to discover more.

Happy reading (and stomach-rumbling)! :)
