I’ve always maintained the belief that there is no such thing as a boring person. Just boring topics. And “boring” is totally relative.
Allow me to illustrate. My husband’s a big UFC fan, and I have to say, I really dread the days when there are matches on. Because he simply WILL NOT STOP talking about those damn UFC fighters.
The fact that I’m not even remotely interested doesn’t bother him in the slightest. He’ll just keep yakking about it anyway regardless (even after I’ve yelled “OMG I don’t care!!!" like 3 times… while threatening to gag him).
So yeah — for me, UFC = TOTAL SNOOZEFEST. But if the hubby were to discuss it with say, another guy who also finds the thought of two dudes senselessly beating the shit out of each other entertaining, that would be a whole other story.
Something that’s life-threateningly boring to you might be absolutely fascinating to someone else. If you’ve ever been a non-webbie stuck in the middle of a meeting with geeks talking code and new apps, or a single/childless lady at lunch with a bunch of new moms gabbing about diapers and breastfeeding, you will know this to be true.
Like I said, it’s relative. Yawn for you, OMG SUPER YAY!!! for them. That’s just the way it is.
So I guess you could say that all you need to do to be interesting (and interested) is find a niche of like-minded peeps, and you’re all set. But it’s really not that simple — mainly because as much as we may want to, we can’t always be around people who like the same things we do.
You’ll notice that there are people who are more universally interesting than others, appealing to people across a wide range of diverse interests. And I’ve often tried to figure out what exactly makes them so riveting.
And AHA! I found the answers!
Cartoonist/copywriter Jessica Hagy has a great blog on Forbes (she even has a book coming out on the same topic) where she outlines 10 ways to be more interesting, and it’s definitely worth checking out.
Here’s a quick preview (or cheat sheet — whatever. Use it as you wish.)
10 Ways to be More Interesting
Now it’s really not our responsibility to be everyone’s personal entertainer, but I think we could all benefit from an attempt to be a little less boring. I know I could. So go. Read the blog. Or grab the book.
If you’ll notice, all these tips really just add up to living a richer, fuller life anyway. Because when you become brave enough to open yourself up to life and its infinite possibilities, I don’t think you’ll ever run out of cool stories to tell.
What is it about people that makes them interesting to you? Or ok, what bores you to death? I’d love to find out. Please share in the comments!
Have an interesting week, my friends. :)
